Cumberland County, Virginia

Cumberland County, VA located in Central Virginia, was formed in 1749 from Goochland County by an Act of the Virginia Assembly. It would later also receive land from Powhatan County and Buckingham County to become the size it is today. A short drive to Farmville VA or as little as a half hour to Richmond, letting you enjoy both small town charm and big city sophistication.

Historical Sites

High Bridge- Built in 1835, is a 2,500 foot long Railroad Bridge that spans 126 feet above the Appomattox River. It originally had a wooden bridge located below for wagons. This is the site of one of the last battles of the Civil War. Today, this is one of the stops of the Lee's Retreat Tour and the highlight of High Bridge State Park.

Tamworth- This historical hamlet offers a rare glimpse into eighteenth century industrial life with the original Muddy Creek Mill, Millers residence, and post office. This community is privately owned and shown by appointment only.

Ampthill Plantation- located in Cartersville, VA on the James River, this bed and breakfast is the only privately owned Jeffersonian property in Virginia.

Bear Creek Lake- The most noted of the lakes within Cumberland State Forest. It's the perfect get-away to get back to nature. Activities center around the 40 acre lake including camping, swimming, hiking, and more...

Cumberland State Forest- As the second largest state forest covering over 16,200 acres and bordering the Willis River, it is the perfect spot for recreation.
