Appomattox-Buckingham State Forest
Located in Virginia's Peidmont, Appomattox-Buckingham State Forest is that state's largest forest with approximately 19,808 acres. The U.S. Government purchased these abandoned farmlands in 1954, turning it over to the state, creating the Appomattox Buckingham State Forest. The Department of Forestry have been successful in their conservation efforts which has developed a diverse forest with a wide variety of both trees and animals.
The Forest offers a wide range of activities for nature-lovers including hiking, biking, picnicking, hunting, and fishing. At the heart of the Forest is Holliday Lake and its 555-acre State Park. Also, within the Forest is Carter-Taylor Trail, a 12-mile loop open for walking, horseback riding, and mountain biking. Plus, visitors with hand-held GPS may participate in the Forest's geocaching adventure.
